Milo Dutch Oven Care Instructions

Whether you're a seasoned pro or simply trying out new products in the kitchen, our cookware is designed to help you deliver consistent cooking results, while enjoying the process. As with any new cookware product, you might have questions about how to best care for it and ensure it stays looking brand new for years to come. Thankfully, we've got you covered.
Keep your cookware looking brand new with these tips
How can I avoid scratching my Dutch Oven?
Our advice is simple: don’t use metal utensils. This puppy is tough, but not indestructible. Less abrasive tools like wood and silicone are your cookware’s best friend. To ensure the longevity of your cookware, we’d advise you not to use metal tools at all to avoid scratching.
Are Milo Dutch Ovens considered anti-stick?
Yes, our Dutch Ovens are designed to be anti-stick but a little bit of fat never goes amiss! We strongly recommend always cooking with oil or butter to start off. The bottom of your Dutch Oven is made with vitreous enamel: it will thank you and be even easier to clean if you cook with oil or butter and heat your Dutch up gradually. Plus, it will impart a richer flavor to your cooking.
Are Milo Dutch Ovens oven safe and cooktop safe?
Our cookware can be used on all types of cooking surfaces: gas, electric solid plate or radiant ring, ceramic glass or induction. It is safe to use in the oven up to 500°F (260°C). Please note, our cookware will withstand hotter temperatures, but discoloration or warping of the knob may occur. If cooking on a glass cooktop, take care to lift your cookware (not just ours) to prevent scratching.
I just heard about thermal shock. Is that a thing I need to be mindful of when cooking with my Dutch Oven?
Yup, this is a real thing. Never plunge your cookware into water while it’s still hot. Our enamel is super durable, but thermal shock is still possible, especially for the cast iron beneath the surface. This rapid temperature change may result in cracking the enamel. For best cooking results, ensure even heat distribution by starting with a medium or low heat. Remember: Dutch Ovens get hot and stay that way. If you’re serving straight from your cookware (and it’s too pretty not to!) remember to place the pot on a trivet or heat-resistant surface.
What’s the best way to clean my enameled Dutch Oven?
Hand washing: When it comes to cleaning, allow your Dutch oven to cool before washing it with warm water, soap, and a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Wipe your cast iron dry and store away from humidity. For a little extra TLC, apply a small amount of Milo Seasoning Oil or any neutral cooking oil to the rim of the pot and the edge of the lid before storing.
In the dishwasher: Yes, you read this right. Your enameled Dutch oven can be cleaned in the dishwasher safely, although repeated dishwasher use may dull the enamel over time. For optimal cleaning results, nothing beats handwashing, but we won’t judge you if you need a little help from time to time. Make sure that your dutch oven isn’t in direct contact with other utensils during the cleaning cycle to avoid repetitive scratching. Take note, if you have purchased a pre-seasoned raw cast iron Dutch oven, however, these are not dishwasher safe and you’ll want to hand wash them exclusively (see instructions below).
Do I need to season an enameled Dutch Oven?
Seasoning refers to the process of developing a protective coating on cast iron through applying oil and heat. Thanks to the interior enamel of most of our Classic Dutch Ovens, they’re ready to go out of the box, no seasoning required. Our Raw Cast Iron Dutch Ovens, however, come pre-seasoned and will require seasoning during their lifetime. Seasoning with Milo Seasoning Oil brings back your Dutch oven’s super non-stick powers and restores its original shine and luster.
What’s the best way to clean my pre-seasoned Raw Cast Iron Dutch Oven?
Hand wash only: These Dutch Ovens require a little more TLC than their enameled counterparts, but have no fear! Milo Cast Iron Soap, delivered with your pre-seasoned Dutch Oven gently cleans cast iron without destroying the seasoning. To wash safely and effectively, use your Milo Cast Iron Soap to remove any left-over food residue in the bottom of your Dutch Oven. Dry it completely. Follow up by seasoning.
How do I season my raw cast iron Dutch Oven?
Again, if your Dutch Oven is enameled, your Dutch Oven is ready to use. If you are using a pre-seasoned Dutch, apply two tablespoons of Milo Cast Iron Oil to your Dutch oven after every use. Use a dishcloth to work the oil into your cookware, covering it completely. For deeper seasoning, place your Dutch Oven upside down on the middle rack of your oven at 400°F for 1 hour. Place foil on a lower rack to catch the drips. Bake for 1 hour and let it let cool in the oven before taking it out. The oil should have completely absorbed and your Dutch Oven will be looking brand new.
How can I prevent scratch marks from damaging my Dutch Oven?
It bears repeating here that you don’t want to be using metal utensils with your Dutch Oven to prevent scratching altogether. However, if you see little scratches and lines after using a wooden spoon or silicone spatula, don’t be alarmed. This is normal, and won’t impair performance at all. In many cases, these marks can be completely removed by first scrubbing with a little baking soda and water, or a cookware cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend.
What are scorch marks and how can I prevent them from damaging my Dutch Oven?
These tend to look like black splotches on the bottom of your cookware and are also normal with regular use. To remove them, we recommend cleaning the bottom of your cookware with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, which usually gets rid of them easily.
Help! There’s a film at the bottom of my Dutch Oven! How can I get it back to normal?
After a particularly epic cooking session, you may notice residue at the bottom of your Dutch oven. Soak your cookware with boiling hot water for 10 to 15 minutes, rinse out and dump some rough kosher salt inside and scrub it around to get a little more abrasion.
How should I care for my Dutch Oven?
If you see little scratches and lines -- especially if you’ve been scraping with metal tools -- don’t be alarmed. This is normal, and won’t impair performance at all. In many cases, these marks can be completely removed by scrubbing with a little baking soda and water, or a cookware cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend.

FAQ & Others Products

Parchment Paper
Can you use parchment paper in the oven?
Absolutely! Because of its heat-resistant silicone coating, parchment paper is perfect for cooking in the oven. It’s perfect for lining cake tins and baking trays, or for cooking delicious packet-baked food like this mouthwatering salmon en papillote. Our recommended maximum usage temperature is 428°F (220°C).
Can you microwave parchment paper?
It is safe to use parchment paper in the microwave. In fact, using a piece of parchment paper is a great way to cover your food in the microwave to prevent mess.
Do you need to spray parchment paper?
Parchment paper does not need to be sprayed with cooking oil prior to use. The natural silicone coating has excellent nonstick properties - making it easy to use and easy to clean up.
What’s the difference between parchment paper and wax paper?
We could (and have) gone on at length about the difference between parchment paper and wax paper! In short, parchment paper is paper that has been coated on both sides with a layer of heat-resistant silicone. This makes parchment paper nonstick, greaseproof and safe to use in ovens. Wax paper, on the other hand, is paper coated with wax - usually paraffin or beeswax. This makes wax paper nonstick and grease-resistant, but it will still melt and burn when exposed to heat.
Can parchment paper burn?
When used under proper conditions, parchment paper will not burn while cooking. For this reason it is important to never expose parchment paper (ours included) to an open flame or cooking element. Parchment paper is safe to use in ovens, and our recommended maximum usage temperature is 428°F (220°C).
There is a risk when using parchment paper in an air fryer that the turbulence of the fan will lift the paper up and bring it into contact with the heating element. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to never pre-heat your air fryer with the parchment paper inside. Only add the parchment paper to the air fryer basket when you’re ready to add your food.
Is freezer paper the same as parchment paper?
Freezer paper and parchment paper are two different things. Freezer paper is a thick paper with one side coated in wax. Freezer paper has a very specific purpose, which is to wrap fresh meat to be frozen. The wax coating helps preserve the quality of the frozen meat, and the unwaxed side can be written on for easy identification. It’s also popular for wrapping seafood and cheese, because the wax coating lends a degree of water-resistance to the paper. Freezer paper is not suitable for cooking, because the wax surface will melt when exposed to heat, and the unwaxed paper may catch on fire. Parchment paper, meanwhile is coated on both sides with silicone. This makes it heat-resistant in ovens.
Can you reuse parchment paper?
You can reuse the same sheet of parchment paper more than once. This is especially useful when baking big batches of cookies! Baked cookies will slide easily off the nonstick paper, and you can reuse the same tray and paper for your next batch. When the parchment paper becomes dry, browned or brittle it’s time to change it. Thankfully Kana parchment paper is fully compostable and biodegradable, so you don’t need to feel bad about reaching for a fresh sheet.
Can you put parchment paper in an air fryer?
You can use parchment paper in your air fryer basket to help keep it clean. Kana’s perforated air fryer liners are made for this! It’s important to remember to only add the parchment paper to the air fryer basket when you’re ready to add the food.
Is parchment paper biodegradable?
Parchment paper is fully biodegradable. Our parchment paper products meet the certification requirements of the European standard - EN 13432. You can feel good about putting Kana parchment paper in your home compost, and if you need to throw it away, you can be assured it will completely break down.
Can you put parchment paper in compost?
You can put parchment paper in the compost! At least, you can with Kana parchment paper. Our parchment paper is certified biodegradable and compostable, so no need to worry about adding used parchment paper to your home compost.
